9/25-26/13

We finished reading "The Once and Future King" excerpt, finished the Heroic Journey worksheet, and found 5 examples of diction and 5 examples of imagery and wrote them in our composition notebooks.

We also began writing Heroic Journeys using the generator at: http://readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/herosjourney/

Begin creating your own fictional hero's journey using this website. We will continue working on them in class next time.

Be sure to copy and paste all written work from the website into a Google doc. or Word doc. and SAVE and email to yourself--otherwise it will be lost forever! This website does not have the capability of saving.

B Day: Have a great weekend--it's homecoming! Go Chargers!

I'll be taking tickets again, so come say hi!

A Day: I'll see you tomorrow!

All the best,

Ms. Lewis

9/26/13

Today we read an excerpt from our textbook titled, "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White.

If absent, you need to come by my classroom and I will check out a CD with the reading on it to you, and give you the worksheet.

The assignment attached to the reading is as follows:

While reading:

  1. Fill out the Heroic Journey worksheet and on the back write: Refer to you DIDLS notes
    1. 5 examples of T.H. White's use of diction with a short explanation of why you think the word choice was a good one. Give me direct quotes and underline the word choice you are  writing about.
    2. 5 examples of imagery--we have not discussed this in length, but do your best to give me an idea of what you know about imagery.
Have a great weekend--it's homecoming! Go Chargers!

I'll be taking tickets again, so come say hi!

All the best,

Ms. Lewis

9/9-11/13

Hi everyone,

Today we practiced more asking different level questions! Asking these questions will help us develop stance and evidence for argument writing.

Come get the handouts (there are a bunch) and the new articles if you don't have them already and I'll explain the assignment.

Your "Asking Questions" practice homework on the Angelina Jolie articles homework is due on Friday 9/13 for A day or Monday 9/16 for B day classes.

Have a great weekend!

Hi there,

If you were absent you need to:
  1. Bring your outside reading book to show me to get approval and points.
  2. Mark your mini-essay with the following: **Note-This is just to help me see what you think each element is so I can plan for what needs clarification, etc. Remember, I did not give anyone instruction on what these elements are, so just do your best to identify each element in your writing. This shouldn't take you longer than 10 minutes.
    1. Circle your thesis/claim statement
    2. Underline direct quotes
    3. Squiggly line under indirect quotes
    4. Box around analysis-->commentary
  3. You missed out on some participation points--be sure to come to class tomorrow so you can make those up.
See you tomorrow B day and next week A day!

Day 5

Work for the day:

1) Mini-essay/response to an Upfront news article-->written in your composition notebooks.

Objective:

I need to get an idea of where you are--skill wise--in terms of writing about informational text. Thus, today is about assessing your writing skills.

Instructions:

1) You will need to arrange to borrow an Upfront magazine from me.

2) In the magazine you choose you are to find an article that resonates with you--this is the article you are going to write about.

3) Write a response (mini-essay) that uses the article for evidence. Organize your response:
  • you need a claim/thesis statement
  • you need direct/indirect quotes
  • you need analysis/commentary
4) A minimum of THREE handwritten pages (so front and back of the page + one more page).

5) You have one hour to complete the response.

*Please limit yourself to one hour. There is no need to look up any of the terms you don't know. I did not give the class instruction as to what these the different elements (thesis/claim, analysis, etc.) are. I need to see what you already know and what you can do cold, without instruction.

Summer Reading

For those of you who have not turned in your Summer Reading Assignments, you must get both the quotes and the take-home questions assignments to me by Friday, September 6th!

For those of you who did not receive the Summer Reading assignment before school started you only have two weeks left to finish reading the books and comple the quotes assignment, which can be found on the CCHS website: http://cchs.canyonsdistrict.org, click the "Academics" tab, and then click "Summer School", and choose "10 Honors" for the complete description of the assignment.

I hope you all had a great weekend,

Ms. Lewis
