Class 12/2-3

Please note: If you are going to be ABSENT for a lit. circle meeting you are to do one or more of the following:

1. Apologize profusely to your group members for your absence and therefore lack of contribution to the meeting.

2. E-mail or otherwise get a copy of the roles you completed for that day's reading to your Discussion Director for the day. They will then present and discuss your roles in your absence. (This could mean you scan and e-mail your role sheets or literally hand the hard copies to you DD to bring to class).

3. Apologize AGAIN to your group and then ask them to fill you in on what you missed upon your return.

It is VITAL that you are attending literature circle meetings. You miss participation points when you are gone--I cannot re-create your literature circle meeting if you are gone--if you miss it, you miss it. COME TO CLASS!

Literature Circles Introduction 11/19-20

Hi guys!

Sorry I didn't get this posted by 5 like I said I would. My meeting ran longer than I thought it would.

If you missed our introduction to literature circles this is what we did:

We will be reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" in literature circles. I love lit circles! Reading and discussing this way allows you as the student to take an active role in the learning process. Each group member will be responsible for fulfilling different roles for the group to further the discussion and allow you the freedom to discuss more than one topic and the topics that most interest you from the book.

To practice this do the following:

Step 1: Watch the YouTube video "For the Birds" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOiyD26cJ2A
You will be analyzing this video to practice the different roles of literature circles.

Step 2: Download the "Role Sheets" on the right side of your screen--> Summarizer, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard, Connector, Illustrator, and Questioner.

Step 3: You will write your answers in your composition notebook.
Title: Literature Circles Practice: "For the Birds" and Underline it.
Then label each of the roles as you go along:
Summarizer:

Connector:

Illustrator:

and so on…

Step 4: Read the instructions for each role and adapt it for the video "For the Birds".

For example:
Summarizer: In the video "For the Birds" there are many little blue birds sitting on a telephone wire. They begin to bicker until a larger blue bird flies up and wants to join the small birds on the wire. They mock and mimic the big blue bird until he flies over and joins them anyway, seemingly unaffected by their actions. The little birds peck the big big and he falls, pulling the wire down, and causing the little birds to be squished together. The little birds peck the talons of the big bird until he lets go and they go flying through the air, losing all their feathers in the process. The big big laughs at them as they hid behind him.

Do this for all of the roles except Word Wizard, because there are no words!

Write down any questions you have and come by and talk to me about them!

9/25-26/13

We finished reading "The Once and Future King" excerpt, finished the Heroic Journey worksheet, and found 5 examples of diction and 5 examples of imagery and wrote them in our composition notebooks.

We also began writing Heroic Journeys using the generator at: http://readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/herosjourney/

Begin creating your own fictional hero's journey using this website. We will continue working on them in class next time.

Be sure to copy and paste all written work from the website into a Google doc. or Word doc. and SAVE and email to yourself--otherwise it will be lost forever! This website does not have the capability of saving.

SRI Testing-if you missed it, you will be pulled out of another class to complete it.

*No homework, unless you still need to finish and turn in your Summer Reading assignments. You have one week left to finish the book and complete the summer quotes assignment.

9/3-4/13

Hi there,

If you were absent you need to:
  1. Bring your outside reading book to show me to get approval and points.
  2. Mark your mini-essay with the following: **Note-This is just to help me see what you think each element is so I can plan for what needs clarification, etc. Remember, I did not give anyone instruction on what these elements are, so just do your best to identify each element in your writing. This shouldn't take you longer than 10 minutes.
    1. Circle your thesis/claim statement
    2. Underline direct quotes
    3. Squiggly line under indirect quotes
    4. Box around analysis-->commentary

See you tomorrow B day and next week A day!

Day 5

Work for the day:

1) Mini-essay/response to an Upfront news article-->written in your composition notebooks.

Objective:

I need to get an idea of where you are--skill wise--in terms of writing about informational text. Thus, today is about assessing your writing skills.

Instructions:

1) You will need to arrange to borrow an Upfront magazine from me.

2) In the magazine you choose you are to find an article that resonates with you--this is the article you are going to write about.

3) Write a response (mini-essay) that uses the article for evidence. Organize your response:
  • you need a claim/thesis statement
  • you need direct/indirect quotes
  • you need analysis/commentary
4) A minimum of THREE handwritten pages (so front and back of the page + one more page).

5) You have one hour to complete the response.

*Please limit yourself to one hour. There is no need to look up any of the terms you don't know. I did not give the class instruction as to what these the different elements (thesis/claim, analysis, etc.) are. I need to see what you already know and what you can do cold, without instruction.

Summer Reading

For those of you who have not turned in your Summer Reading Assignments, you must get both the quotes and the take-home questions assignments to me by Friday, September 6th!

For those of you who did not receive the Summer Reading assignment before school started you only have two weeks left to finish reading the books and comple the quotes assignment, which can be found on the CCHS website: http://cchs.canyonsdistrict.org, click the "Academics" tab, and then click "Summer School", and choose "10 Honors" for the complete description of the assignment.

I hope you all had a great weekend,

Ms. Lewis

On page 10 of your "Writing Manual" that you received on the first day is the "AACC: Annotation, Abstract, Contextual Connection". Please annotate your article by doing numbers 3, 8, and 12 in the non-fiction section (the bottom half of the page).

You may come pick up the article in person or download it from the "Helpful Handout" section on the right side of this screen. It will be available for download after 5 pm on 8/26.

Thanks,

Ms. Lewis

DAY 2

Day 2

Today we discussed the importance of getting to know each other in class. Here are the highlights: Avoid awkwardness... no "hey you"s, easier to show someone your work for peer review, and more likely to share thoughts during discussions, and therefore, NO judgements because you know and respect the person you're working with.

Next, we did a one-page handwritten "Second Day Writing Assignment", in which there was the option to write about one of four things. They are as follows:

Option One:
Write me a story. This can be a true story about something you have done, something that happened to you OR it can be made up. You can use one of the story starters listed below if you cannot think of anything else:

  • "Last night on my way home from..."
  • "As I flew through the air, the only thing I could think was..."

Option Two:
Write me a book review. It can be a book that you read in high school or in middle school. Tell me what it is about and why you did or did not like it.

Option Three:
Write me a letter. Tell me a little bit about who you are and what you expect to learn from this class. Do you like English? Why or why not? What motivates you to learn?

Option Four:
Write me a poem. Type of poem and length does not matter. Additionally, write at least one paragraph explaining why you wrote the poem or what inspired you to write it.

*A Day Students*
You have received your summer reading assignment and it is due Tuesday, August 27th.

I (finally) have copies of the assignment that you may come and pick up from me and I'll explain the requirements in person. Thank  you again, for you patience with this matter.

All the best,

Ms. Lewis

Day 1

Here's what we did:

  • Discussion of classroom "Guidelines and Procedures". The PowerPoint will be available soon.
  • Discussion of Disclosure Statement-which needs to be signed by both a parent/guardian and by the student. A downloadable version is available in "Helpful Handouts" to the right on this screen.
  • Summer Reading: The assignment that you were to have completed before school started will be turned in with your "Summer Reading Writing Assignment" (these are two different assignments-you will need to come to my classroom to get a copy of this take home assignment), so you may use the quotes you found to aid you in answering the questions.
Don't Forget:
  • You are required to read one outside book of your choice per semester. This can be fiction or non-fiction, the only requirement is that you choose a book befitting an 10th grade Honors student, i.e. no children's books, or elementary or middle school books. You will need to show me, or email with the title and author of the book if you're reading an electronic version, for approval once you have chosen.
  • You need a composition notebook that is just for this class so please come with one every day.
